Studio portrait of 2089 Private (Pte) John Justin O’Leary, 32nd Battalion. A postal employee from Woodville, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during early June 1916. Pte O’Leary was severely wounded at the battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment and prolonged recuperation, including a transfer to the Anzac Provost Corps for four months commencing in August 1917, before rejoining his battalion on the Western Front in late January 1918. Pte O’Leary was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 13 February 1918. He was aged 25 years.
