Studio portrait of 2078 Private (Pte) Horace Ambrose Murray, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Snowtown, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during early June 1916. Pte Murray was wounded at the battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough before rejoining his battalion on the Western Front in late February 1917. He was hospitalised with a sprained hip from late February to mid April 1917 and then attended sniper training in mid-July. He was hospitalised for three months with trench fever and influenza, rejoining the battalion in late November 1917. Pte Murray was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 13 February 1918. He was aged 20 years.
