Studio portrait of 3535 Private (Pte) Cyril Gilbert Holt Counsell, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Brighton, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) for Plymouth, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Fricourt, France. He was wounded in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 1 October 1917 and was able to rejoin his battalion 14 days later. Pte Counsell was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 15 May 1918. He was aged 22 years.
