Studio portrait of members of the 32nd Battalion, who embarked from Adelaide with the 8th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Ballarat on 12 August 1916 for Devonport, England. Identified, from left to right: back row: 3566 Private (Pte) Charles Thomas Heuzenroeder, 3548 Pte Martin Farrell, 3652 Pte Gustav Alfred Gerhardy. Front row: 3553 Pte George Alfred Foote, 3615 Pte Thomas Edward Reilly and 3621 Pte Herbert Stephen Smith. Pte Gerhardy, a farmer from Black Hill, South Australia, prior to enlistment, received training in England then proceeded to France where he attended wireless training at Campagne-les-Hesdin before joining his battalion on the Western Front near Bapaume, France. Pte Gustav Gerhardy was wounded in action near Dickebusch, Belgium, on 1 October 1917 and was evacuated to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, France, where he died of these wounds on 14 October 1917. He was aged 23 years. The other five soldiers survived the war and returned to Australia for discharge on dates from September 1918 to December 1919.
