Studio portrait of 4467 Private (Pte) Hedley Norman Lawrence, 27th Battalion. A baker from Mount Gambier, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) for Egypt. He was relocated to England in early August 1916 before proceeding to France at the end of September. Pte Lawrence was transferred to the 32nd Battalion and joined his new unit near Strazeele in mid-October 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 3 June 1917. L Cpl Lawrence was killed in action near Hamelet, France, on 17 April 1918. He was aged 29 years.
