Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Ernest Lionel Shaw Cutts, 32nd Battalion. A warehouseman from Port Wakefield, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked as a Sergeant (Sgt) with A Company from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) for Suez. His battalion relocated the Western Front, France during mid-June 1916. Sgt Cutts was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation. On his recovery he was transferred to the 8th Training Battalion and attended the Candahar School of Instruction followed by No 2 Officer Cadet Battalion, Cambridge, where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant on 1 December 1917. He returned to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Desvres. 2nd Lt Cutts attended a Bombing Course in early February followed by two months at 10th Corps Infantry School. 2nd Lt Cutts was wounded in action while on patrol on 25 May 1918 and was evacuated to No 5 Casualty Clearing Station where he died of these wounds on 3 June 1918. He was aged 25 years.
