Studio portrait of 2672 Private (Pte) Charles Hogarth, 48th Battalion. Pte Hogarth had served in the Boer War with the Northumberland Fusiliers before migrating to Australia in 1910. A die maker from Fremantle, Western Australia, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 30 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) for Devonport, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined the 32nd Battalion on the Western Front near Bernafay. Pte Hogarth was killed in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on 13 October 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was aged 37 years.
