Studio portrait of 2617 Private (Pte) James Graves, 32nd Battalion. A horse driver from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire for Egypt. In late April 1916 he was transferred to the 47th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in early June 1916. Pte Graves was wounded in action with shell shock on 8 August 1916 and during treatment he was discovered to be suffering from a serious kidney illness which required his evacuation to England for further treatment and recuperation. He rejoined his battalion near Albert, France, in mid-February 1917 and ten days later was transferred back to the 32nd Battalion. Pte Graves was wounded in action near Corbie on 14 April 1918 and was evacuated to 41st Casualty Clearing Station where he died of these wounds two days later. He was aged 20 years.
