Studio portrait of 1913 Private (Pte) Arthur Albert Wallis, 32nd Battalion. A clerk from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment in the 12th Battalion, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 20 April 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) for Egypt and joined his battalion at Gallipoli on 16 June 1915. Six weeks later he was hospitalised with enteric fever and evacuated to Australia for treatment and recuperation. Pte Wallis was transferred to the 32nd Battalion and embarked with the 12th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 16 December 1916 for Devonport, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Racquinghem on 1 September 1917. Pte Wallis was hospitalised with shell shock in later that month and was able to rejoin his unit two months later. Pte Wallis was wounded in action near Messines, Belgium, on 19 March 1918 and died of these wounds two days later in No 2 Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 26 years.
