Studio portrait of 2589 Private (Pte) Charles Samuel Curgenven, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Parkside, South Australia, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire for Egypt. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Curgenven was appointed Lance Corporal in late January 1917 and promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 18 April 1917. He was transferred to the 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, England from late May 1917 and rejoined his unit on 8 October 1917. Cpl Curgenven,was awarded the Military Medal for his actions in the field near Ypres on 17 November 1917. He was wounded in action near Corbie, France, on 23 May 1918 but remained on duty. Cpl Curgenven was killed in action near Amiens, France on 19 June 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 23 years.
