Description

Studio portrait of 2072 Private (Pte) James Michael, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Clare, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Michael was appointed Lance Corporal in late August 1916, promoted to Temporary Corporal in early September and further promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) on 20 October 1916. Sgt Michael was hospitalised with severe bronchitis on 8 December 1916 and was evacuated to 11 General Hospital in Camiers where he died of this illness 5 days later. He was aged 32 years.
