Studio portrait of 4090 Private (Pte) Frederick Owen Werndly, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Armadale, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 28 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) for Devonport, England. After training in England he proceeded to France and joined his unit on the Western Front near Bapaume. He was hospitalised from mid-August to mid-December with trench fever and influenza. Pte Werndly was wounded in action near Albert, France, on 31 July 1918 and died of these wounds the following day in No 4 Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 23 years.
