Studio portrait of 4335 Private (Pte) Hartley George Nicolle, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Goodwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth England where he was hospitalised on arrival with illness. He was discharged to the 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott and in April 1917 joined his battalion on the Western Front near Bapaume, France. In March 1918 he was hospitalised with dermatitis for six weeks. Pte Nicolle was wounded in action near Corbie, France, on 19 May 1918 and was able to rejoin his unit three weeks later. Pte Nicolle was wounded in action on the second occasion on 23 June 1918 and was evacuated to 12 General Hospital, Rouen, where he died of these wounds one month later. He was aged 29 years.
