Group portrait of, from left: 4296 Private (Pte) Ernest Gilbert Hooper; 4326 Pte George Henry Morris and 4318 Pte Harry Charles Ledger, 32nd Battalion. All three embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A191) for Plymouth, England. After training with the 8th Training Battalion they proceeded to France and joined their battalion on the Western Front near Bapaume. Pte Morris, a farm labourer of Second Valley, South Australia, prior to enlistment, was killed in action in near Warneton, France, on 6 February 1918. He was aged 27 years. Ptes Hooper and Ledger were wounded in action with gas attacks near Corbie, France, in April and May 1918 respectively. Both were evacuated to England for continuing treatment and recuperation. Pte Ledger returned to Australia for discharge in May 1919. Pte Hooper remained in England as part of the HQ AIF Cadre, was promoted to Temporary Corporal and returned to Australia for discharge in March 1920.
