Studio portrait of 5781 Private (Pte) Phillip Thompson, 6th Battalion, of Kyabram, Vic. A farmer prior to enlisting in March 1916, he embarked from Melbourne with the 18th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ayrshire (A33) on 3 July 1916. He arrived in France in October and was transferred to the 8th Battalion in December. In November 1917 he was appointed Lance Corporal and was promoted to Corporal in June 1918. On 24 August 1918 he was wounded in action in France and died later that day at a casualty clearing station. Cpl Thompson was 24 years of age.
