Description
Studio portrait of 4528 Private (Pte) Edward Arthur Winter, 23rd Battalion, of Cassilis, Vic. He was a student prior to enlisting in June 1915. Winter embarked, as an Acting Sergeant, from Melbourne with the 11th Reinforcements on board HMAT Malwa on 21 March 1916. He arrived for service on the Western Front in September 1916 and in October was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. In November he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant and in April 1917 he was appointed Lieutenant (Lt). On 6 May 1917, Lt Winter was wounded in action at Bullecourt, France. He died later that day, aged 24.
