Studio portrait of 5062 Private Lawrence Clifford Campbell, 10th Battalion. Inscribed on verso in pencil 'Taken in Camp Egypt / To Lizzie / From Cliff / This is how / nearly all / the soldiers / dress here.' Pte Campbell embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25 March 1916. He was severely wounded in the right leg in May 1918 and returned to Australia on 23 September 1918. His cousin 6130 Private (Pte) Daniel George Campbell, also of the 10th Battalion was killed in action in France on 11 August 1918. Letters written by Pte Lawrence Campbell to his sister Lizzie and family are held at the Australian War Memorial. See PR04635.
