Description
The grave of Lieutenant James Lionel Montague Sandy AFC. Sandy and his observer 559 Sergeant Henry Francis Hughes AFC, of No. 3 Squadron AFC, were attacked by a formation of German fighters while on patrol in their RE8 on 17 December 1917. During a lengthy battle the Australian crew shot down Albatros D.Va fighter D. 5390 (now in the AWM collection), but were both killed by a single bullet a few minutes later. From the collection of Lieutenant Tom Latham Baillieu who served with No. 3 Squadron AFC.
