Booth, Mal (Australian War Memorial, b.1957)
Collection relating to the curatorial deployment of Mal Booth, Australian War Memorial, Iraq, 2008.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of a pocket-sized diary with black moleskine cover that was used by Mal Booth, Head of the Research Centre at the Australian War Memorial, during a curatorial visit to Iraq from 11 to 27 November 2008. The diary contains short entries on daily events, reminders, and notes for future reference. Booth records a meeting with war artist George Gittoes, his journey to Baghdad, time spent aboard HMAS Parramatta (2003-), his impressions of flying in a Lockheed C-130 Hercules and wearing body armour, the people and objects he photographs, and his encounters with and interviews of Australian Defence Force personnel. He also reflects on the value of curatorial deployments, record keeping, the need to obtain material related to the Special Operations Task Group, the role of the Australian Defence Force in Iraq, and offers lessons for future curatorial deployments. The collection also contains a list of names on note paper and seven business cards (one Booth's) that Booth collected during his trip; these items were previously kept in the pocket in the back of the diary.
