Description

Studio portrait of 1003 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Edward Yates, 42nd Battalion (the Corporal stripes on his uniform indicate that he may have temporarily been promoted to the rank of Corporal). An engine driver of Booval, Qld, with two years service in the Citizen's Military Forces (CMF), Yates enlisted on 17 December 1915. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Borda (A30) on 5 June 1916. He reverted on his own request to the rank of Private (Pte) on 25 November 1916. Pte Yates died of wounds on 24 May 1918, aged 28, and is buried at Chichester Cemetery, Sussex, England.
