Studio portrait of 880 Private (Pte) Robert James Gully, 43rd Battalion. A farmer from Tickera, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with D Company from Adelaide on 9 June 1916 aboard HMAT Afric for Marseilles, France, before joining the 8th Training Battalion in England. After training in England he proceeded to France in mid-October 1916 to join the 32nd Battalion. However, he was returned to England as being under-age and eventually joined the 32nd Battalion on the Western Front near Racquinghem, France, on 1 August 1917. Pte Gully was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 16 March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was aged 20 years.
