Civilian portrait of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) William McGregor Cairncross with son Leopold Jasper Cairncross. Lt Col Cairncross served at the Victoria Barracks in Melbourne for 25 years. He designed a water bottle held at the Australian War Memorial (see REL42143). During the Boer War he was controller of stores at Victoria Barracks. Two of his sons, 31577 Sergeant William McGregor Cairncross and 33512 Trooper Cyrus Hay Cairncross, served with the 2nd Scottish Horse during the Boer War and in British units in the First World War.
