Studio portrait of 4616 Private (Pte) Henry Roy Tasman Williams, 12th Battalion, Hobart, Tas. A labourer prior to enlisting in November 1915, Pte Williams embarked from Melbourne with the 14th Reinforcements on board HMAT Warilda (A69) on 8 February 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) on 18 July 1917. L/Cpl Williams died in France on 2 July 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 21 years of age. Pte Williams was one of three brothers who enlisted: 461 Pte Walter Thomas Monks, 51st Battalion, was killed in action on 1 April 1917; 6335 Corporal Eric Wilfred Donald Monks, 17th Battalion, returned to Australia in 1919.
