Studio portrait of 4996 Private (Pte) Henry Patrick Critchley, 27th Battalion. A clerk from Gumbowie, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 27 June 1916 aboard HMAT Barambah (A37) for Plymouth, England. After training in England he proceeded to France and was transferred to the 32nd Battalion in mid-October 1916. Pte Critchley was hospitalised with trench feet and evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his unit in early February 1917. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 9 July 1917 and then promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 1 December 1917. Cpl Critchley was killed in action on 24 June 1918 near Amiens, France, on 24 June 1918. He was aged 23 years.
