Studio portrait of 2986 Private (Pte) Clement Cornelius Selwyn Sowter, 32nd Battalion. A dairyman from Brompton, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) for Suez. He relocated to join his battalion on the Western Front, France in the latter weeks of June 1916. He was hospitalised with illness on arrival in France and did not join his unit until mid-August 1916. He was hospitalised on a second occasion in late December 1916 with a series of illnesses and was evacuated to England for treatment before rejoining his unit near Racquinghem, France on 1 August 1917. Pte Sowter was wounded in action at Polygon Wood on29 September 1917 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his battalion near Bernes in early September 1918. Pte Sowter was wounded in action near Etricourt, France, on 30 September 1918 and died of these wounds later that day. He was aged 22 years.
