Description

Studio portrait of 4324 Private (Pte) Hans Mack, 32nd Battalion. A groom from Lake Albert, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Becourt 12 April 1917. Pte Mack was hospitalised with illness for four months from 1 June 1917 and evacuated to England for treatment and furlough. He was hospitalised with illness again in late March 1918 and rejoined his unit six weeks later. Pte Mack was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 25 June 1918. He was aged 26 years.
