Description

Studio portrait of 3884 Private (Pte) Harold Avery Watts, 32nd Battalion. A bacon curer from Milang, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1916 aboard HMAT Commonwealth (A73) for Devonport, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Fricourt on 11 February 1917. He was attached to the 8th Brigade Supply Dump for three months from mid-October 1917. Pte Watts was wounded in action near Amiens on 24 June 1918 but was able to remain on duty. He was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 2 August 1918 and then attended an Intelligence Course before rejoining his unit on 23 September 1918. L Cpl Watts was killed in action near Etricourt on 29 September 1918. He was aged 29 years.
