Studio portrait of 2668 Private (Pte) Thomas Hughes, 48th Battalion. A miner from Collie, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 30 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) for Devonport, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and was transferred to the 32nd Battalion and joined his new unit near Bernafay. Pte Hughes was killed in action near Dickebusch, Belgium, on 14 October 1917. He was aged 22 years.
