Description
Studio portrait of 4747 Private (Pte) Horace Robert Appelbee, 32nd Battalion. A stone polisher from North Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 23 June 1917 aboard HMAT Borda (A30) for Plymouth, England. He fractured his arm accidentally in the latter part of the voyage and was hospitalised on arrival. During recuperation he attended a Signallers Course and consequently did not join his battalion on the Western Front near Vaux-sur-Somme, France, until early May 1918. Pte Appelbee was killed in action near Amiens on 23 June 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 24 years.
