Description

Studio portrait of 1336 Private (Pte) Alfred Clare Ball, 12th Battalion. A hotel porter from Port Pirie, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 15 February 1915 aboard HMAT Itonus (A50) for Egypt. Pte Ball was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 8 July 1915 and was able to rejoin his unit in early September. In late October 1915 he was hospitalised with enteric fever which resulted in his repatriation to Australia in January 1916. He was transferred to the 32nd Battalion in early September 1916 with regimental number 3753 and embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1916 aboard HMAT Commonwealth (A73) for Plymouth, England. He remained in England for some months on training courses before joining his unit on the Western Front near Ouderdom, Belgium. Pte Ball was wounded in action near Vignacourt, France, on 24 June 1918 and died of these wounds in No 61 Casualty Clearing Station later that day. He was aged 21 years.
