Studio portrait of 4367 Private (Pte) Ernest Cecil Smith, 32nd Battalion. A compositor from Kapunda, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth, England. He was hospitalised late in the voyage due to illness which continued for a week after arrival in England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Grevillers on 12 April 1917. Pte Smith was initially reported missing in action on 28 July 1918 but was subsequently determined to have been killed in action on that date. He was aged 24 years.
