Description

Studio portrait of 856 Private (Pte) Alfred Otto Anderson, 43rd Battalion. A wharf labourer from Rosewater, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with D Company from Adelaide on 9 June 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Marseilles, France, and then overland to England for training with the 8th Training Battalion. In late October 1916 he proceeded to France and where he was transferred to the 32nd Battalion. Two weeks later he was hospitalised and evacuated to England. During the following 12 months he suffered a number of health problems both physical and mental which culminated in his repatriation to Australia in the hospital ship HMAHS Kanowna. During the voyage Pte Anderson took his own life by throwing himself overboard. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 22 years.
