Description

Studio portrait of 1302 Private (Pte) Richard St John Kennedy, 32nd Battalion. A shipping clerk from Perth, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with D Company from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Kennedy was wounded in action on 20 July 1916 during the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough. As part of his recovery he was attached to Headquarters AIF Depots in England in late October 1916. He was promoted to Temporary Corporal in January 1917 and 19 May 1917 he was transferred to the 63rd Battalion and promoted to Corporal. The following day he was promoted to Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS). On 19 September 1917 he was transferred back to the 32nd Battalion and joined his unit on the Western Front near Ouderdom, Belgium, on 2 November 1917. CQMS Kennedy was killed in action near Amiens, France, on 24 June 1918. He was aged 41 years
