Associated with the service of Private R J Martin, 12th Battalion, AIF. Born in Laura, South Australian in 1891, Roy John Martin was working as a labourer when he enlisted in the AIF on 30 November 1914. 1352 Private R J Martin embarked aboard (A50) HMAT Itonus at Adelaide on 15 February 1915 with the 3rd Reinforcements to the 12th Battalion, AIF.

Martin served on Gallipoli and received a gun shot wound to the head on 12 July 1915. He was evacuated to Malta and then to England. After treatment at 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield, Middlesex, Martin embarked for Australia aboard HS Runic in November 1915. He received his discharge from the AIF in February 1916.
