Description
Studio portrait of 4159 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) Joseph Henry Martin, 17th Battalion, of Glebe Point, NSW. A school teacher prior to enlisting in October 1915, A/Cpl Martin embarked from Sydney with the 10th Reinforcements on board HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. After further training in Egypt and England he arrived in France on 17 November 1916 and reverted to the rank of Private. He was appointed Lance Corporal in January 1917 and promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 22 March 1917. Cpl Martin was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917, aged 29. Martin wears a uniform with Sergeant's stripes. This may indicate a temporary rank not recorded in his service record.
