Studio portrait of 432681 Aircraftman (later Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt)) Robert Lockyer Masters, 150 Squadron, RAF, of Tumut, NSW. He enlisted from Sydney on 16 January 1943. While on a raid to bomb the oil refineries of Harpenerweg near Dortmund and Bochum, the Lancaster PB 853 he was piloting was hit by anti-aircraft flak and crashed on 24 March 1945. Six of the crew managed to bail out and land safely, Flt Sgt Masters and three others were murdered by German nationals, two became prisoners of war. A War Crimes Group investigated the murders and those guilty of the crimes were convicted with sentences ranging from 5 to 20 years imprisonment, to death by hanging.
