Studio portrait of VX18871 Private (Pte) Ian Lawrence Wheeler, 1 Australian Corps Petrol Park, of Hawthorn, Victoria. Pte Wheeler enlisted on 29 May 1940 and served initially with 1 Australian Corps Petrol Park before transferring to the 2/5th Battalion and serving in the Middle East in Bardia, Tobruk and Greece before evacuation to Palestine and then fighting at Damour, Syria. The 6th Division returned to Australia and in October 1942 deployed to Milne Bay and saw fighting at Wau and Salamaua. Pte Wheeler was killed in action at Mount Tambu, New Guinea, on 18 July 1943; he was aged 23.
