Studio portrait of 179 Corporal (Cpl) Lewin Stanhope Maddrell, 23rd Battalion. An electrical engineer from Melbourne, Victoria, he enlisted in February 1915, aged 20. He saw service at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, where he was promoted Lieutenant in 1916. Cpl Maddrell was awarded the Military Cross in July 1917 for his determination in leading bombing parties to repel enemy counter attacks at a critical period. He returned to Australia in 1919 as an honorary Captain.
