Newspaper portrait of four Western Australian soldiers prior to embarkation for service in the Korean War. The four friends, all 18 or 19 years of age, had been in National Service together before deciding to volunteer for service in Korea. Left to right: 52109 Private (Pte) Kevin Thomas 'Doc' Watson; 52106 Pte Maurice Keith 'Snow' White; 52103 Pte Arthur John Scurry; and 52101Pte Norman Percival (Norm) Fury. They first travelled to Japan for training at 1 Reinforcement Holding Unit, Hiro. The day before embarking for Korea, Pte White drowned at Hiro, and was buried in the British Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Yokohama. Privates Watson, Scurry and Fury served in Korea with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). Pte Watson was wounded in action on 7 August 1952 and returned to Australia. Pte Fury was wounded in action in September 1952 and also returned to Australia. Pte Scurry continued his service and following a raid to capture a Chinese prisoner, he was reported assumed missing, presumed killed in action on 25 January 1953.
