Studio portrait of 4886 Private (Pte) Edward George Smith, 2nd Battalion, (left) David Henry Smith (right) and their father William Smith, of Corrimal NSW. Pte Edward Smith, a miner prior to enlisting in August 1915, embarked from Sydney with the 15th Reinforcements on board HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. He was transferred to the 54th Battalion on 20 April 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 29 June 1916. Pte Edward Smith was killed in action at Fromelles, France between 19 and 20 July 1916, aged 22. David Henry Smith, also a miner, enlisted on 27 March 1916 but was discharged as medically unfit shortly after. He died of lung disease on 17 November 1916, aged 38.
