[Afghanistan 2009- Repatriation ceremony]
Description
Green cloth bound sketchbook containing six drawings from Major Julian Thirkill when deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 to undertake operations as part of the Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF). The image on the verso of page 17 is of a repatriation or ramp ceremony. Two Dutch soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan are being ceremonially farewelled and returned to The Netherlands. The image shows soldiers from several nations lining the road into Kamp Holland marking the passing of the bodies of the soldiers. The soldiers third and fifth from the right are Australian and wear the slouch hats to signify this. The camp can be seen in the background with the guard towers and the fences of barbed wire.
