Informal portrait of NX32671 Private (Pte) John Bede Quigly, 2/19 Battalion, of Crows Nest, NSW. Quigly's battalion arrived in Singapore on 18 February 1941 and moved to southern Malaya for further training. In early October they moved to the east coast to prepare defensive positions against the impending Japanese invasion. On 14 January 1942 they moved forward to Bakri in order to reinforce the 2/29 Battalion, allowing them to successfully withdraw. Outflanked by the Japanese forces, with its ammuntion exhausted and casualties mounting, 2/19 Battalion began a withdrawal.
