Studio portrait of 468 Air Mechanic 2nd Class Eric Warner Sutherland, No. 1 Squadron (later No. 67 Squadron), Australian Flying Corps, of St Kilda, Vic. A carpenter prior to enlisting in August 1915, Sutherland embarked from Melbourne with the 2nd Reinforcements on board RMS Malwa on 25 July 1916. He arrived in Egypt in August 1916 to serve in the Middle East. Sutherland was promoted to Air Mechanic 1st Class in December 1918 and returned to Australia in March 1919. Sutherland's father 436 L/Cpl Charles Sutherland and his brother 437 Driver Colin Sherson Sutherland also served in No. 67 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. A third brother 7913 Driver Austin Charles Sutherland MM, served in the 6th Field Artillery Brigade. All survived the war and returned to Australia.
