Studio portrait of 863 Sapper (Spr) James Greeson Hircoll, 1st Field Company Engineers. A bridge carpenter of Woollahra, NSW (originally, London, England), prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney with the 4th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Argyllshire on 10 April 1915. He served 11 months on Gallipoli before he was sent to hospital with influenza. He developed shell shock and returned to Australia on 17 March 1916 to be discharged from service due to shell shock and an injury to his foot. In June that same year, he was accidently struck by a tram; he died in hospital on 5 August 1916, aged 25. Spr Hircoll is wearing a Discharged Returned Soldiers badge.
