Pre enlistment studio portrait of 2189 Private (Pte) Patrick Francis Joseph Hayes, 59th Battalion, of Woodend, Vic. A driver prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne with the 4th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 1 August 1916. Pte Hayes served on the Western Front and died of wounds on 26 March 1917. He was 23 years of age. His brother 228 Pte John Thomas Hayes, 10th Machine Gun Company returned to Australia on 21 April 1918.
