Men smoking hashish from a pipe while watching a rocket attack on Kabul. In April 1992, the Mujahideen, various loosely-aligned Afghan opposition groups led by Commander Ahmed Shad Massoud, overthrew the pro-Soviet Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (DRA), took control of Kabul and commenced negotation for the creation of a government. During this period, many of these groups split into rival factions and began fighting amongst themselves, particularly in south Kabul. Every day, rival Mujahedeen from another key faction commanded by the founder of the Hezb-e Islami political party, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, based themselves on the outskirts of Kabul and fired rockets into the city, causing significant death and damage. Hekmatyer later became Prime Minister in the new goverment, and Massoud Defence Minister.
