Studio portrait of Herbert William Henningham, signed ' Yours sincerely H W Henningham 8/12/18'. A clerk prior to enlistment, Henningham embarked as a Private with B Company, 17th Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 12 May 1915. During his service Henningham transferred to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion and reached the rank of Lieutenant (Lt). In 1919 Lt Henningham was awarded the Military Cross (MC) 'for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer, while leading his platoon in an attack on a village, was checked by machine gun and rifle fire from an enemy post. He rapidly organized and led a party against it, killing or capturing the whole of the garrison, and enabling the advance to be continued. He showed great coolness and disregard of danger during the consolidation, and set a fine example to his men.' He returned to Australia in 1919. Lt Henningham's brother 6348 Lance Corporal Malcolm Manley Henningham, 33rd Battalion, was killed in action on 12 October 1917.
