Description
Gargling parade or troops aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) during their journey from Australia. The men are possibly members of the 5th Reinforcements, 3rd Pioneer Battalion who embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla on 9 November 1916. Gargling was carried out daily as a precaution against meningitis. During the journey there were six deaths from meningitis and two from other causes. (One of a collection of photographs belonging to Lieutenant (Lt) Robert Trevor Williams, 3rd Pioneer Battalion.)
