Studio group portrait of three soldiers identified from left to right; 5415 Private (Pte) Albert Ernest Maynard, 5404 Pte Thomas James Lawler and 5453 Pte Walter Maxwell Scott. Photograph is inscribed bottom with the title 'The Jordan Trenchers'. Of these three men, all of whom embarked with the 1st Battalion 17th Reinforcements on 14 April 1916, only Pte Scott survived the war, returning to Australia on 10 June 1919. Pte Maynard, who was transferred to the 53rd Battalion in July 1916, died of pneumonia on 24 December 1916 at the 1st Casualty Clearing Station, France. Pte Lawler who was also transferred to the 53rd Battalion in July 1916, died of wounds received from a shell blast during action in France on 23 July 1916. Pte Lawler was buried at the Estaires Communal Cemetery, Estaires, France.
