Cameron, Colin Stewart (Flight Sergeant, b.1923 - d.1943)

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 422410 Flight Sergeant Colin Stewart Cameron, 10 Squadron. The four letters date from April to August 1943, They were sent to Cameron's father's cousin, "Uncle" George Broomfield, a farmer, of "Bow Hill", Dingo Creek, Wingham, New South Wales. The letters include descriptions of farms in Canada and England, as well as weather conditions and tourist activities. Cameron also refers to his delight at being posted to "the famous Australian Squadron No 10 Sunderland Sqdn," see letter 23/06/1943. In his last letter, 6/08/1943, Cameron describes an air battle with German Ju88s lasting an hour, where his aircraft sustained 15 hits. This letter is incomplete. The letters come from the collection of the late Miss Annie Beatrice McPherson, George Broomfield's niece.

422410 Flight Sergeant Colin Stewart Cameron grew up in the Wingham area in New South Wales. He was 18 years of age when he enlisted at Coogee, Sydney on 22 May 1942. Flt Sgt Cameron was sent to Canada as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. He was trained as a gunner and then travelled to England where he was attached to 10 Squadron. He died in the Atlantic Ocean on 21 September 1943.
